Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate if the mood and behavioral disorders could be correlate with quality of life in patients with Parkinson’s disease.

Background: Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s disease, in which motor symptoms are well understood, but the mood and behavioral symptoms need more investigations.

Methods: We included in our study 41 patients (68% males and 32% women) diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease as outlined by Parkinson’s disease Society Brain Bank Criteria. Mean age of the patients was 62,9 ± 4 year and mean duration of the disease was 7,8 ± 4,3 year. Disease severity was assessed with modified Hoehn &Yahr staging scale which varied from 1.5 and 4. Mood and behavioral disorders were assessed using the self-assessment Non-motor Symptoms Questionnaire for Parkinson’s Disease (NMSQ). The 39-Item Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) was used to rate quality of life in these patients. Motor symptoms were assessed using the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics V20, using Pearson correlation coefficient with a significant level of p<0.05.

Results: Our study showed that both motor and non-motor symptoms significantly affected the quality of life in patients with Parkinson’s disease. The quality of life was significantly correlated with the mood disorders symptoms. We also find a strongly correlation between severity and frequency of symptoms and deterioration of quality of life. Frequency of mood and behavioral symptoms increased with the progression of the disease.

Conclusions: Our study highlights the influences of mood and behavioral disorders on quality of life in patients with Parkinson’s disease.
