Session Title: Parkinson's Disease: Non-Motor Symptoms
Session Time: 1:15pm-2:45pm
Location: Hall 3FG
Objective: This study aimed to examine the concurrent validity of Arabic translated version of the King’s PD Pain Scale (KPPS) in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD).
Background: Pain is a common symptom in people with PD and it has significant impacts on people ability to function at home and work and consequently their quality of life. Thus, pain assessment in this population is always a necessity. The King’s PD Pain Scale (KPPS) is a valid tool for pain assessment in people with PD scale specially designed to assess pain localization, intensity and frequency in PD patients. The scale is yet is not validated in Arabic language. We aimed in this study to examine the concurrent validity of an Arabic translated version of the King’s PD Pain Scale (KPPS) in people with PD in Jordan.
Methods: The English version of the KPPS was translated into Arabic in accordance with the World Health Organization (WHO) guideline for translating assessment tool. The concurrent validity of the KPPS was conducted by examining the relationship between the Arabic version of the KPPS and the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI). Additionally the relationship between the Arabic version of the KPPS and the Short Form-36 (SF-36) was examined. Associations between the tests were examined using Spearman correlations.
Results: Twenty two individuals with idiopathic PD with a mean age (SD) of 65.9 (6.9) years were recruited for this study. The Arabic KPPS total score significantly correlated with the BPI interference subscale (r= 0.69, P<0.05) and several subscales of the SF36 (P<0.05).
Conclusions: The Arabic KPPS scale showed good concurrent validity and can be utilized with Arabic-speaking patients with PD.
