Session Title: Parkinson's Disease: Non-Motor Symptoms

Objective: The principal objective is to study the relationship between fatigue and depression with the peculiarities of the progress of PD.
Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is considered as a combination of classic motor and non-motor symptoms. Fatigue and depression are characteristic non-motor manifestations of PD. In addition to the emergence of fatigue syndrome, pathological fatigue negatively affects the quality of life and motor deficits in patients with PD. A number of studies have demonstrated the presence of fatigue and depression in patients with PD even at the stage of the absence of motor disorders and an increase in the incidence of fatigue, depending on the severity of the condition. Among the patients with stage I on the Hoehn and Yahr scale fatigue was observed in 37.7%, and in IV-V stages of PD – in 81.6%. However, most studies do not show the relationship between fatigue syndrome and depression with the peculiarities of PD.
Methods: 76 patient with PD participated in the study 40 (52.6%) women and 36 (47.4%) men. The mean age was 70±9.5 years (from 50 to 84 years old). Two groups of patients were formed: first – patients with the tremor form of PD – 39.5% (30) and second – akinetica-rigidity form of PD – 60.5% (46). Fatigue was studied using the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventore (MFI-20). Depression was studied using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS).
Results: Score MFI-20 scale was higher in patients with the tremor form of PD was higher than in patients with akinetica- rigidity form of PD (56±6.2 and 33±3.3 respectively). Patients of the first group performed scale GDS above by 3±2.1 in mean than patients second group.
Conclusions: It was found that patients with a tremor form of PD are more prone to developing pathological fatigue and depression than patients with akinetica-rigidity form of the disease. We can assume that there are similar pathogenetic mechanisms of tremor development, depression and fatigue.
