Session Title: Parkinson's Disease: Cognition
Session Time: 1:15pm-2:45pm
Location: Hall 3FG
Objective: To explore the changes of cognitive function in Parkinson disease (PD) patients with deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN).
Background: STN-DBS was considered safe and effective for the treatment of motor functions in advanced PD. However, it’s effect on cognitive functions which also have influence on patients’ life quality is uncertain.
Methods: To evaluate these effects, we performed a prospective 1-year follow-up study. A total of 46 PD patients who underwent STN-DBS were enrolled. Neuropsychological functions were assessed using tests suggested by MDS diagnostic criteria for PD-MCI in all the subjects at baseline and 24 months after surgery.
Results: The patients recorded worse verbal fluency performance, whereas their scores of MMSE, MoCA and other cognition domains remained stable 1 year after the surgery.
Conclusions: Our results confirm previous reports that verbal fluency function becomes worse after STN-DBS.
