Objective: The aim is to compare the differences of Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB) between mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in PD (PD-MCI) and PD with normal cognition (PD-NC).

Background: Thease three brief cognitive tests have been well known as screening tools of cognitive impairment in Parkinson disease (PD). Despite many screening instruments, there are no reports about directly comparisons between these tools

Methods: Twenty six patients of forty six de novo PD were diagnosed as PD with MCI (PD-MCI) and 20 as PD with NC (PD-NC). We assessed cognitive impairments of PD by using three brief screening tools such as MMSE, MoCA and FAB.

Results: Contrast to MMSE and FAB, MoCA total score (p = 0.016) of PD-NC showed higher than that of PD-MCI. The language (p = 0.041) and frontal executive/attention domains (p = 0.021) of MoCA particularly showed significant differences between PD-MCI and PD-NC.

Conclusions: Like previously established reports, MoCA only showed significant difference in PD-MCI compared to PD-NC. Contrast to MoCA, MMSE and FAB are limited to evaluate very mild cognitive impairments of PD-MCI from PD-NC in the de novo PD.
