Session Title: Parkinson’s Disease: Clinical Trials, Pharmacology And Treatment
Session Time: 1:45pm-3:15pm
Location: Hall 3FG
Objective: To field test a clinically relevant checklist to ensure that health care professionals (HCP) are prompted to consider the various enablers of personalised medicine (PM) for Parkinson’s disease (PD).
Background: PM for PD is just not genomic or pharmacogenetic medicine but involves a number of enablers that has been recently described as the “circle of personalised medicine” (Fig 1).1 Such strategies should be routine in clinical practice dealing with PD but are often overlooked. [figure1]
Methods: A clinical audit based survey was conducted in 75 consecutive PD patients using the PM checklist (Table 1) to assess whether these issues are considered by HCP’s. In over 70%, issues related to body weight, comorbidity (diabetes and osteoporosis), clinical subtypes, ethnicity and lifestyle were not considered. Patients and HCP’s were thereafter asked to comment on the suitability of such a checklist for use in an international clinic setting. [table1a and table 1b]
Results: Time taken to complete the checklist varies between 5-7 minutes. 80% of patients including a multi-ethnic group and 75% of HCP regarded the PM checklist as relevant, valid, important and useful. All felt the length of the checklist was adequate and not too long and the language understandable. HCP’s additionally commented that use of the checklist improved delivery of holistic care of PD.
Conclusions: The PM checklist is clinically relevant to enhance care delivery for PD. Large scale clinical validation and linguistic translations is now required.
