Session Title: Parkinson’s Disease: Clinical Trials, Pharmacology And Treatment
Session Time: 1:45pm-3:15pm
Location: Hall 3FG
Objective: We investigated the efficacy of intensive impatient rehabilitation treatment in Parkinson’s disease patients
Background: Rehabilitation treatments have beneficial effects in Parkinson’s disease (PD).We determined whether 2 weeks intensive inpatient rehabilitation treatment (IIRT) to PD patients might improve motor performance.
Methods: 45 PD patients (15male 30female, mean age70.3±8.8years Hoehn & Yahr stage I:4, II: 16, III: 20, IV: 5 mean disease duration 7.4±4.4years) who had been treated with antiparkinson drugs at our hospital underwent 2 weeks IIRT and were assessed before treatment and post treatment. Outcome measures were UPDRS part III, 10m walking speed, Berg Balance Scale, isokinetic knee extensor strength and Barthel Index.
Results: There were significantly improved in UPDRS part III (16→13.9)10m walking speed(1.07m/s→1.35m/s), Berg Balance Scale(42.0→47.4), isokinetic knee extensor strength (right 2.85Nm/kg→3.24Nm/kg left 2.88Nm/kg→3.20Nm/kg and Barthel Index(92.1→95.2), but Timed Up and Go Test(15.8s→10.2s) did not differ significantly.
Conclusions: Most of outcome measures improved significantly at the end of treatment. These results suggest that IIRT is useful in improving motor performance.
