Session Title: Cognitive Disorders
Session Time: 1:45pm-3:15pm
Location: Hall 3FG
Objective: Study the fact delays dementia progression.
Background: Alzheimer’s disease is unrestored yet now. Relieving the life upset of patient and postponing the disease progression are the most reasonable treatment targets.
Methods: We reviewed the records of specific outpatient department for memory disorder patients, and included clinical possible Alzheimer’s disease who had been pursued for at least 1 year, study the relationship between MMSE annual decrease and the number of patients’ long term caregivers. We exclude patients who have combined with severe out of control chronic disease, cardiac or cerebral accident, severe injury or surgical events.
Results: Among 103 possible AD patient, the number of long term caregivers is related with progression of AD. More long term caregivers is negative correlated with AD progression in patients above 65 years old (Pearson correlation coefficient=-0.218,P=0.045). In those under 65 years old patients, more long term caregivers trends to have negative correlated with AD progression (Pearson correlation coefficient =-0.274, P=0.270). If grouped more detailed, in 80 ~89 years old group, the number of long term caregivers is negative correlated with progression of AD (Pearson correlation coefficient =-0.392, P=0.022), we didn’t find this correlation in other age groups.
Conclusions: Sufficient long term caregivers number is possible correlated with better outcome of AD patients. It may be because of sufficient caregivers may alleviate pressure for each other, and may provide better care to patients, especially in those very old patients, who is weakened significant in life independent, as well as his/her very old couple.
