Session Title: Clinical Trials and Therapy in Movement Disorders
Session Time: 1:15pm-2:45pm
Location: Exhibit Hall C
Objective: Evaluate the physical mobility and functionality by the ratio of bone mineral density in Parkinson’s disease.
Background: Bone loss in Parkinson’s disease (PD) may be associated with severity and duration of the disease. Osteoporosis isa multifactorial skeletal disorder characterized by a low bone mineral density (BMD) at which the risk of developing fracture isincreased and affectthe quality and quantity of life.
Methods: Cross-sectional study with a descriptive approach were evaluated 58 patients of both sexes diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD), aged between 55 and 85 years, Hoehn & Yahr (HY)I, II and IIIof the staging scale.Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) part III was used to assess disease progression, daily living activities and motor activityand Timed Up and Go(TUG) testfor balance andpropensity to falls. BMD of lumbar spine and femoral neck were assessed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).
Results: 14 patients (24,13%) were osteoporotic and 33 (56,89%) osteopenic. The sample consisted of 55% men, the mean age was 67.9 (± 8.1 years); 0.736 ± 0,118g/cm² of BMD in the femur and 0.933 ±0,165g/ cm² BMD in the spine. It was shown an impaired functional performance by the UPDRS III and there were the relative risk for falls among patients regarding their TUG test results. The mean duration of PD was 7.9 +/- 6.8 years (time since diagnostic).
Conclusions: Older patients with PD have lower BMD, leading to a worsening of functional performance by increasing postural instability and tendency to falls, fractures and possible long periods of hospitalization.
