Session Title: Neuroimaging (Non-PD)
Session Time: 1:15pm-2:45pm
Location: Exhibit Hall C
Objective: To determine whether multiple system atrophy (MSA) patients can be differentiated form Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients using combination of multimodal neuroimaging techniques.
Background: MSA have been misdiagnosed as PD even in the expertizing neurological clinics.
Methods: Clinically diagnosed 58 PD and 58 MSA patients were out-patiently recruited. Clinical diagnoses were based on a Japanese PD diagnosis criteria or a clinical criteria for the diagnosis of MSA by American academy of neurology respectively.
All patients were scanned by using a 3.0 Tesla MRI unit (Achieva XT; Philips Medical Systems, Best, The Netherlands) and were received an intravenous injection of 167 MBq of [123I] IMP (Nihon Mediphysics, Nishinomiya, JAPAN), and were received an intravenous injection of 167 MBq of [123I]FP-CIT (DaTSCAN; Nihon Mediphysics, Nishinomiya, JAPAN).
Results: Comparing with PD patients, MSA patients had “cross bun signs”, T2* low intensity rims on the putamen, cerebellar and/or brainstem atrophy measured by MRI volumetry, frontal hypoperfusion by [123I] IMP-SPECT. However, both patients showed low uptakes in the caudate and putamen by [123I]FP-CIT-SPECT.
Conclusions: This is a study to demonstrate usefulness of using combination of multimodal neuroimaging techniques to diagnose MSA from PD.
